Talk about creative kiruv! On Chol Hamoed Sukkos, my sons and some friends went to the Miami Dolphins game. For real football fans, half the fun is before and after the game. Tailgate parties are all the rage for fans who come early, get the best parking, and break out their lounge chairs, barbecue grills, hot dogs, hamburgers, beer and music. A Sunday afternoon game could easily attract thousands of partiers getting psyched for the big game and then "chillin'" out afterwards celebrating or bemoaning the big plays.
Well, as my sons and their friends walked up and down the parking lot aisles taking in the scene, what did they see and who did they run into? Take a guess!
Yes! Chabad!
Chabad shlichim had gotten there early, built a few sukkos and were cookin' up kosher hotdogs and the works. Have a free hotdog (with a mezonos roll) and make some brachos in the sukkah! And for a bonus you can make the bracha(s) over the arba minim! And, not only that, our heroes went undercover exchanging their black hats and white shirts for the very chic and traditional green and orange Dolphins jerseys and caps--while they walked up and down the aisles with lulav and esrog in-hand indefatiguably (is that a word? :-)) repeating the Rebbe's mantra, "Excuse me, are you Jewish?"
Gotta hand it to 'em... who else, but Chabad, could turn a major Miami Dolphin's game into a major kiruv opp?
Kol hakavod!
